Our Existence Has Always Been Political

“It’s kink, don’t be political on here” I’ve been hearing that more and more each day. The constant gaslighting of our existence. Seems we’re only allowed to be here if we are being consumed, fetishized and degraded otherwise “shut up uppity Negro and obey...” When things get a little uncomfortable, you know when people challenge the status quo about race issues?

Identity  politics, a handy little buzz phrase colonizers use to shut us down and gaslight us so they don’t have to deal with the damage that’s been done. Have you really examined what you’re saying when you throw that at us?  Let’s take a look at identity politics for a moment shall we?

Oxford Dictionary definition of Identity Politics:

i·den·ti·ty pol·i·tics

1. a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances, moving away from traditional broad-based party politics.

Ok, seems simple enough right? People gathering with the same interests, ideology, association, political affiliation that may be against societal norms. etc, but here’s the thing, colonizers, are the ones that separated us by race , labelled and ranked us by how close we were to them. They viewes us as  “savag**” because we were darker and different than them. We’ve been demonized to justify their ill treatment towards us. Then separated us by colour, removed our children, indoctrinated us to believe the hate that so fuels them. Then took away our language, culture, religion, and spiritual practices, rights, our social status and sexual freedoms.

Colonizers are the ones that created the one drop rule,  separated drinking fountains in the USA, created miscegenation laws so it was illegal to marry anyone outside of our race, created intelligence tests to keep Black folks out of schools their schools.

Colonizers are the ones who taught us in the diaspora, Trans Atlantic Slave Trade to hate each other,  our features, hair, skin, colourism and our people.... divide and conquer. But we’re the ones who’s hung up on identity?

Colonizers  taught us that our features and attributes were inferior. So there’s no surprise that some colonizers are enraged that the truth we have been telling for generations has been pouring out everywhere, so much that you can’t be contain it any longer!

Keeping us down wasn’t enough though, when we found an ounce of pride in our hair, our music, our culture, our lingo, our accomplishments,  they mocked us, shamed us for being proud of who we are. We found our pride in-spite of losing everything, all ties with our IDENTITY wiped out. That wasn’t enough when we started to embrace ourselves and what we were doing and colonizers  copied our styles, for their  own gain without crediting us for it. Stealing from us and claiming it as theirs own has been happening for ages. We will probably never know how pervasive that practice has been.

Colonizers, you created this monster of identity politics, oh but it’s not you? You wasn’t there? You’ll claim your war heroes, (we have those too)  your lineage to the Queen and that you’re 10 times removed from some long gone historical figure, but you won’t claim this one! You don’t want the dirt or blood on you, but you’ve inherited this one. Sorry but it’s not going away till it’s been reckoned with.

If you are actively participating and benefitting from all the identity politics colonizers created to oppress us and kept us chained in , the day of reckoning has begun,  you’re stuck with it now... it’s a tough huh?

Im sure you’ll “get over it” Give it about 400+ years...
